Riot breaks out in Australian Refugee Detention Center: Christmas Island

Riot breaks out in Australian Refugee Detention Center: Christmas Island

Just goes to show how even 969 asylum seekers from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka can be a handful on a deserted isolated island detention center.

Even when Australia itself is a signatory of the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention which expects it to give all political refugees the equivalent rights to employment, health care, education, social benefits and travel documents like native Australian citizens.

I hope that this will make the Australian "journalists" INSAF and stop trying to "bad-mouth" other countries who are doing their best to deal with over 2 million illegal immigrants, when these countries themselves are still developing countries themselves, unlike the land of paradise Australia.

Australia, as you all know is in the top 5 best quality of life places to live in the world.

Unlike Malaysia who has to struggle to cope with the millions of illegal immigrants on its shores under the intense and unfair spotlight of the "righteous" Machiavellian video journalists from Special Broadcasting Service in Australia, Channel 4 in UK and Amos Roberts, another Australian who works for Al-Jazeera.

Is it a wonder why we need the services of 500,000 RELA volunteers to maintain civil order and control crime in Malaysia?

I think not.

It is even more sickening to find out that only a little over a year ago, the Australian Immigration policy as regards asylum seekers was exactly the same as Malaysia's.

Arrest all asylum seekers and put in detention. Then process each and every application. This could take years, as is the case everywhere else.

Australia Announces Changes on Asylum Seekers

"SYDNEY, Australia — Australia is ending its policy of automatic detention for asylum seekers who arrive in the country without visas, the government said Tuesday."

So, Amos Roberts, get off your high horse. Go do a video documentary on Christmas Island for SBS and Al-Jazeera instead.

It's in your own backyard and much closer to home.

Australia Puts Its Refugee Problem on a Remote Island, Behind Razor Wire

By Norimitsu Onishi
Published: November 4, 2009

"CHRISTMAS ISLAND, Australia — Deep in the jungle on this small island lost in the Indian Ocean, Australia’s new $370 million refugee detention center reaches its full power after its lights come on at dusk. Bracketed by rain forest, steep cliffs and the sea, it rises from the enveloping darkness and becomes visible from the island’s only inhabited corner, about 10 miles away."

The center — opened a few days before Christmas but now nearly full with refugees from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka — has come to symbolize what many call one of Australia’s defining fears: the arrival of boat people from Asia."

"All boat people seeking asylum in Australia are first brought here to Christmas Island, just 220 miles south of Indonesia but nearly 1,000 miles from the Australian mainland, and most are now held at enormous cost within the center’s electrified, 13-foot-high razor-wire fences."

Asylum seekers injured in Christmas Island riot

"THIRTY-SEVEN Afghan and Sri Lankans have been injured in a massed brawl on Christmas Island involving 150 detainees.

Ten of the detainees were taken to the island's hospital and three of the more seriously hurt - one with a broken leg, one with a broken jaw and one with a broken nose - were flown to Perth for treatment yesterday.

Some guards suffered minor injuries while breaking up the fight, an Immigration Department spokesman said last night."

Malaysia has a system that is corrupt unlike that of Australia.
Their government is one that cares about what happened to it unlike that of Malaysia.
You seem to be very ignorant of what this country has become, do you?
Why don't you read Mr Lim Kit Siang's blog or even some of the government controlled MSM?
Do you realise that Malaysia is going to be swarmed by illegal "refugees" sooner rather then later?
And this country is stupid enough to want to build a bridge linking Sumatra. Why? To make it easier for them to swarm us?
Yet here you are complaining about millions of refugees in this country!!
If you want to shoot yourself in the foot, nobody can stop you, can they?
Perhaps no-brainers like you deserve no-brainer leaders in the government!
Thank you for your comments troon.

Actually, I think that it's because there are Malaysians like you that the country will never progress.

You do nothing but complain about corruption, yet people like you would not hesitate to offer or pay money if "things can be made easier" for you or your family.

Not true?

Tell me how many times have you refused to give a bribe and asked for the speeding summon instead?

How many times have you chose to queue in line or make applications through the proper channels instead of getting someone you know on the inside to help YOU with your application, etc etc.

WE always blame others but the ugly truth is that we should look at ourselves first before pointing the finger at others.

On the whole, Malaysians make comments like very spoilt children. They think they know everything there is to know about politics, human rights, racism, etc.

Wake up and read this article on absolute poverty for starters:

"It estimates that "in 2001, 1.1 billion people had consumption levels below $1 a day and 2.7 billion lived on less than $2 a day."[92]Six million children die of hunger every year - 17,000 every day.[93]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty#Absolute_poverty

The truth is most Malaysians have absolutely no idea what true corruption, racism, oppression or genocide really is.

Why?

Because of your good fortune to be a Malaysian.

You sound just like the other blogger who was so upset at how unfair and useless the teachers of his child is.

Just because the 9 year old child did not score 100 marks for each and every subject. So what does he do? He goes through the marking with a fine tooth comb so that he can present what HE thinks is right and criticise the teachers for "failing in their duty".

The reality of the matter is that Malaysians like you are so spoilt that you don't even know it when you are living a dream.

It almost seem like there is some sort of pathological ungratefulness that has infected a lot of Malaysians.

Just unbelievable.

Want to have your cake and eat it too?

Then migrate to The lands of Paradise.

There are so many "Top 10" living standard non-corrupt countries for you to go to. Why, the nearest beacon of democracy and corruption free zone is just 1.2 miles from the south of Malaysia's borders. Is that too far for you to go??

What is stopping you?

Why even bother to reply to my post?

With Malaysians like you whom have already made up their minds that there is no hope, there is really no need for people like Aidan and Amos to put the country down. People like you can do the job better.

Lim Kit Siang, Raja Petra, Malaysiakini, all have their own agenda. Which is to put the ruling government down so that they can take over the reign.

Do you expect their comments to be uncoloured even though they all say that they are "speaking for the people"?

How naive can you be?? Do you think these people work for charity? Do they fast unto death so that the people of Malaysia stop treating each other like rubbish to the selfish politician tunes?

Get off from your high horse. It's time you stick you head out of that righteous cocoon that you have made for yourself.

When one believes that the world is made out of nothing but evil and suffering, evil and suffering is all that one can and will see.

If you could just be a little mature, travel more, actively seek out and read historical and political literature from books and not fill your head with all these mass media active brain-washing, you might just be a little happier where you are.

Last but not least, if there is a problem. Fix it.

Join the police force or RELA if you think they could do a better job. Run in the next election if you think you can be a better politician.

Start a voluntary organisation to help the poor and aged if you think that they are being neglected.

Ask what you can do for your country.Ask not what the country can do for you.

Don't just be another miserable whiner.

Leave if you can't or won't do anything apart from whining.

You can always claim to be a political refugee escaping from prosecution in your home country and you will automatically be granted rights in Australia, UK, US and the rest of the signatory of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention.

You'll be doing everyone a favour, including yourself.

Before I forget, there is no use building "Berlin Walls" on the Kra peninsular nor in turning all the refugee boats back at sea by spending billions of ringgit.

Human nature is such that you can not stop them by walls, razor wires, electric fences or naval blockade.

They will find a way to get through.

The only real long term solution to the refugee problem is to reach out and help these troubled and deprived countries develop, economically and politically.

When these people have a home where they can make a decent living, educate their children and have access to health-care, they will be less inclined to become desperate refugees.

Once there is economic prosperity and political stability, then political maturity can start to take place. Freedom in poverty means nothing.

Don't take my word for it. Ask the millions and millions of Africans who are dying each month in INDEPENDENT African nations or even the 100 million homeless children that lines the streets of Rio De Janeiro,Bombay, Delhi and Calcutta.

To isolate them like what you are suggesting will only make matters worst, create more suffering and force the good people to chance illegal immigration at all costs.

So, building a bridge to Sumatra is not enough. We need to build bridges to Burmah, Cambodia, Vietnam, East Timor, Sri Lanka...

"Prosper thy neighbour" is the only true path to peace and prosperity.

Everything else is just a zero sum game.

There is a lot of work to be done.
In my thirty years of driving, I have received only one summon and that was promptly paid. No haggling no bargaining!
Perhaps that's better than your record!
As for what I can do for my country, UMNO/BN has landslide majority after landslide majority. In fact, the electorate have all these decades allow the BN government too much leeway to run the country; until such time that when they have the temerity to question the percentage of the NEP.
You know what happened? They were told to shut-up and just accept the government's figure! No argument allowed, right or wrong, it is your government! Sounds of Hitler?
And do you realise that to further clamp the mouth of the electorate, the OSA is used very, very liberally to prevent anything the government did from being discussed!
Is that the type of government you want? Is that the legacy you want to leave to your children, grandchildren?
And inspite of this, info were leaked, perhaps by disgruntled government officials that revealed a mountain of scams and scandals hidden by the OSA! Brutuses abound in UMNO/BN!
In fact, any laws to protect malfeasance is completely illegal and are null and void.
Wonder why nobody ever challenge that!

Dear troon,

thank you for the reply.

I believe you completely as regards the summon and I apologise for suggesting otherwise.

Despite my posts and comments, I am not blind nor ignorant to what is happening and how a lot of the good people of Malaysia feels.

In fact, this disdain and hopelessness that Malaysians feel for our country has affected me deeply and I am still recovering from my loss.

But no matter what, I cannot turn my back on the country and people and walk away as "its' none of my problem".

There is no argument that there are still a lot of work to be done for our country, politically and economically.

However, due to the multi-racial nature of the population, it is not an easy task.

The fears on all sides are real and it just needs one selfish Machiavellian politician to set the whole tinderbox alight.

Then, we will have freedom, liberty and complete unfettered human rights but no country and very little Malaysians left, apart from those in pieces.

The quest for equality is a innate human need. Unfortunately, like so many other innate human needs, it can easily be used and manipulated for secondary gains. This is something that many people are not aware of.

Before you compare us to Hitler's regime, you should know that that very regime did not appear "out of the blue".

It was a result of a German nation completely torn apart economically, politically and socially.

Did you know that they had Nationalist, Socialist and Communist German parties, all at each others throats and using guns, bombs and fists to try to solve their differences?

Add to this the Great Depression and 10 million unemployed Germans in 1930 and the stage was set.

By the way, the Versailles treaty was basically a "rape" of the German nation. So, in a way, the rest of Europe and America was responsible for the rise of Hitler. Karma then ensues.

Don't forget that we are talking about a Nation of Germans. Even-though they may speak different languages in different areas, they still have a lot more in common than we do.

And when you look at Sri Lanka, Iraqi Shites and Sunnis, Afghanistan, Sudan, The Irish, etc, you then start to realise that despite all the faults of our leaders and government, they have not done too badly.

The problem now is not that there is corruption or mismanagement in the country.

Even in China where the punishment is decapitation, it still happens.

Even in the great UK, there is corruption and openly defended by their Prime Minister as "necessity for National Security".

He stopped further investigations into the scandal by official decree.

Is this any different from the use of OSA/ISA to maintain national security?

Tony Blair block bribes inquiry, high court told

David Leigh and Rob Evans
The Guardian, Friday 15 February 2008

"Saudi Arabia's rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday."

Blair: Blame me for BAE
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/jun/13/bae.tonyblair

Mark Oliver and Matthew Tempest
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 13 June 2007 15.13 BST

"Tony Blair said today that he accepted responsibility for the BAE affair, and refused to implicate other ministers.

After being asked at prime minister's questions about the £43bn arms deal between BAE Systems and Saudi Arabia by the Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Menzies Campbell, Mr Blair said: "If you want to blame anyone for this, blame me. I am perfectly happy to take responsibility for it.""

So, show me a country free of corruption and faults and I will show you a man who has never sinned.

The issue is not that Malaysians are so passionate about equality, human right and democracy.

Rather it is that these issues are being used to misled the general public in order for the politicians to achieve their own Machiavellian personal gain.

For at the end of the day, unless the people of Malaysia are ready to change, changing the politicians alone per se will not help and do nothing but to destabilise the country.

Political maturity of the people needs to come first before mature politicians can exist.

Then and only then will any change in political policies be a true representation of the aspirations of the people and will then last and not lead to anarchy and counter-revolutions.

What do I mean by political maturity of the people?

It is the ability of the common people on the streets of Malaysia, to understand that each and every individual, community and race have their own specific needs and fears, and each and every one of these needs and fears are all legitimate, no matter how insignificant it may seem to another person's eyes.

And that the political process is a process where the needs and fears of everyone is discussed and address, not a "sparing arena" where the winner takes all.

For now, this may mean a government that consists of three different races.

At least, we are honest about our political process and there is an attempted representation for all races unlike the more politically advanced western countries.

In the future, when we have stopped poisoning the minds of our children, when they can see themselves as Malaysians first, then Chinese second.

When Malaysians are no longer pitted against each other in the name of human rights, democracy and equality by unscrupulous or ignorant politicians.

When all Malaysians can trust one another and not put their faith in "survival of the fittest", "pure meritocratic practises" or "pure capitalism policies".

Then we can start to think about removing the scaffolding that is providing order and support to our society.

For we all know, the "Winner" by political cunning or force does not live nor last forever. When he/she is usurped, there will be repeated and endless bloodbath as the change of the "Winner" repeats itself.

The history of the Chinese Dynasties have clearly shown this and there is no need for us to repeat the carnage.

So sometimes, it is good to live in a period of no change and stability.

For without peace and prosperity, this political maturation process cannot take place.

This is what the people of Malaysia needs to understand.

Otherwise, we will shoot ourselves in the foot, face, and everywhere else and throw away what we have all worked so hard to achieve over the last 50 years.
