Recently, I heard a lot of people, especially the students, as well as the jobless fresh graduates (including some of my friends) are involved in Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) and they called it as "business".
As what I know, those 'members' need to pay a lump sum of money from the range of RM2,000 to RM30,000 as the 'membership fees' (I am referring to the famous MLM company, Lampe Burger). Then, the company will give them some "free" company products (Actually, they had already paid it with the membership fees. But most of them do not realise it). The company told the members that, the products are good and after they use it, they will be 100% satisfy with the product and of course they need to market those GOOD products. This is how the company make money.
Besides, the company will also bring them to sit for a number of talks or conferences, and tell them that they will be able to earn 5 digits (Easy money) of salary a month if they work hard. And they also promote their successful senior members who have BMW or bangalows houses after joining this company. (But I heard, they bought those properties by lending money from the bank and they are unable to repay the bank in the end.) I don't know how true are those.
Moreover, the company also provide them with some business trips to overseas (a friend of mine just came back from a “business trip” to Hong Kong and

As what I heard from my dad, MLM is also known as Pyramid scheme, which is actually an illegal scheme. So, why there are still so many people involved with this type of business? Is this really some easy money?

MLM Companies are not all bad, maybe some of the up level distributors (upline) manage their own group member (downline) with different approach which might raise ethical issues.
Further more, there is no free meal under the sun! We have to pay for what we get. Who says MLM company provides everything FREE? If a trip can benefits us in term of sale improvement or knowledge, then it is fair to pay for it.
How a MLM company organize the member's line structure is the important part for a member to success. Different company have different structure. Put new comers under the old members is one of the kind and this is acceptable, just like the structure in other company. Senior on the top and Junior at the bottom.
Finally, please don't think every MLM company is cheating, try to be more rational. MLM company is just like normal company. It provides product, training opportunity, publication, R&D and etc. Member who joint the company acts as sales executive to promote the company's product & gets commission as return. Just like we give our time, skills and knowledge to a company to allow it generates profit and the company pay us a fixed monthly salary. I think this is a fair trade.
