St James' Park re-named
Posted by: diddo, 6-Nov-2009

Newcastle’s St James' Park will now be known as sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park. This is after Mike Ashley has decided to name it after his company.

The renaming of the stadium has sparked additional controversy to Newcastle’s never ending saga’s with fans and supporters about the way the club in run, and rightly so.

I for one, do not agree that this name is suitable, even though it will only be used until the end of the season, thereafter the naming rights will be up for grabs on the open market.

I guess this is just about money, but Ashley should also take into consideration the opinions of the supporters and not just think about financial gain.

Of course it is a known fact that Ashley is currently running at huge losses in efforts to keep the club going, but hey – that’s what he bargained for when he bought the club. You can’t win all the time.

And even when things don't go the way he wishes, it is always impotant to keep those die-hard supporters at heart.

Don’t be foolish and sack Benitez
Posted by: thestriker, 5-Nov-2009

Of all the top teams in England, Liverpool are the most sorrowful right now. They look almost certain to be eliminated from the Champions League after the draw in Lyon, and if they do get into the Europa League (through the back door), then they can count themselves lucky.

And when one considers the talent in the Anfield squad, it is mind-boggling to try to understand just what is wrong with the Reds. They have loads of talent – despite what Rafa Benitez might have to say about this.

The issue about depending too much on Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard is all nonsensical. I think it’s just the way Benitez organises his first XI when the two top stars are not in the lien-up. Even then, when Torres and Gerrard do play, they still lose (or draw).

But before Liverpool’s fans get even more confused, perhaps I could offer a word of caution:  Do not sack Benitez, no matter how poor the team is playing right now.

Chances he will get things right a little later on in the season. So what - some might ask. Well, if they do replace him now with Kenny Dalglish as some have suggested – Dalglish will not win the Premier League title this season, and not next season either.

I think Liverpool should just keep going and try to build on what they have left to play for this season – the FA Cup. Get the squad working as a cohesive unit again, and make sure of finishing in the top-four (which looks a rather tall order at this stage) and qualify for the Champions League next season.

United pounce

Manchester United in their normal fashion went on to deny CSKA Moscow any joy when they came charging back from 3-1 down to even out things at 3 apiece.

Most will know that when it comes to United, it is not over until the fat lady sings. CSKA Moscow will know this all too well after they were comfortably ahead only to see it all taken away.

Igor Akinfeev did well to keep a lot of potentially threatening strikes at bay, but the amount of balls that United hit that struck the wood-work, will definitely give CSKA Moscow a sense of relief when looking at the final score.

The game was truly a thrilling encounter with lots of action which we all love to watch.

Shay gets some recognition

Shay Given’s move from Newcastle to the hyped Manchester City was somewhat of a bargain for Hughes.

The former Newcastle goal-keeper was scooped by City for a fairly low Ł8million. This was achievable because of Newcastle’s downbeat state of affairs.

This guy is an excellent goal-keeper, and does not make a lot of unforced errors comparatively to many.

Hughes however has shed some light on the 33 year-old, and went on to mention that Shay could be one of his better buys, should he maintain his vein.

This makes sense considering how much City paid for the move and given his strengths and skills as a goal-keeper, Hughes might very well be true.

Off course his presence at City maybe a little overshadowed with the likes the show stealers like Tevez, Adebayor, Robinho and company, but nevertheless he still gets the job done.

Drogs return

Didier Drogba’s European return, will be much in scrutiny following his little escapade that costed him a three match ban come end of last season.

With Chelsea as strong as ever going in against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League tie, all eyes will be on Mr Drogba’s behaviour.

While both Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti and UEFA president Michel Platini are both adamant that he is ready and understands that he made a mistake.

I hope he will just do what he does best ‘score goals’ and stays out of trouble….
