The lizard (Geeko) has landed: openSUSE 11.2

Today, my post will be completely different.
It will serve to spread the word that the latest version of the most user-friendly open-source operating software for Intel and AMD powered desktops, notebooks and netbooks is now available.
Open-source means that the underlying computer code is available to anyone who wold like to examine, utilise or contribute to its development for the good of the code ignorant masses like me.
Open-source means that it will be continuously developed to make it even more useful, stable and user friendly as time goes by. The current major upgrade cycle is 12 monthly, with updates released at least once every week.
Open-source means that it is free, not only in terms of monetary cost, but more importantly. in terms that you are free to legally share it with family and friends if you find it useful, free to contribute to the code and feel free to make as many copies as you like legally for sharing.
Open-source means that it has "Copy-Left" intellectual protection. This means that any and every change or improvement in the software code must be made available to everyone and pass-on covered by the same license. This is known as the "
GNU General Public License". See:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html This is true freedom in terms of computer software.
As you will see from the following screen shots, openSUSE uses the "Graphics User Interface", just like Apple and Windows operating systems.
Like Windows Vista and Windows 7 and the Apple Leopard operating systems, it also supports widgets among many other features.
Unlike Windows and Apple operating systems, openSUSE 11.2, comes complete with all the Office, Web-Browsing, Multi-media and Communications software that you'll ever need. You can Twitter, Skype, Facebook and the lot.
These packages are the equivalent of the commercial software that you pay hundreds/ thousands of Ringgit for. They do everything you would expect from them as well. For example, Open-Office is able to soft in Microsoft Office formats (doc, ppt, etc). It is also able to open and edit these files as well.
Firefox is the equivalent of Internet Explorer or Safari.
YaST is the equivalent of the "Add/Remove" application in Windows, but much more user friendly and powerful.
Last but not least, because of the open-source nature, it is extremely stable and secure. Bugs are fixed quickly and updates are much more frequent than Windows Update service. Also, it is secure by design, with integrated SE Linus and AppArmor built in. It also has a firewall built-in and pre-configure so you are protected from the word go.
Hardware driver support is built-in and you will be amazed at how quickly they are installed automatically. It is truly plug and play.
Languages wise, it supports Chinese, Indonesian, Punjabi, Telegu, Tamil and Bengali in addition to English and many more of the main languages in the world. And yes, it is available for free.
Interested?
Then try it for yourself.
openSUSE is so efficient that you can easily run it on any laptop, notebook or desktop that is 5 years old or less.
It doesn't need much ram or processing power and you will be amazed as to why you had to keep buying a new computer every other year until now.
The "Live CD" version can be downloaded as an "ISO" file and then burn to a CD. From this CD, you can boot-up your notebook/desktop with it by pressing "F12" during the start-up process. This will give you the option to select "Boot with CD-Rom".
That is all you have to do.
The Live CD will load openSUSE into RAM memory and run it from there. You DO NOT have to install it to test drive the software. Just choose "Launch Live CD" at the start-up menu. That is all you have to do.
When you are finished trying it out, just choose "Restart computer" and it will automatically shut down and eject the CD at the end. There will be no changes to your system unless you specifically and intentionally do so.
Any files you want to save
must be saved to a USB Key or external hard drive etc as RAM memory is volatile and will be automatically erased on shut down.
All the configuration that you changed when running off the Live CD will also only be transient as well. However, there is a way to save them to a external disk or USB key for the next Live CD session.
I recommend downloading the Live CD ISO file because it is much smaller in size and hence, much faster to download.
Furthermore, you can use it to install openSUSE as well as it contains all the basic installation files and programs to get you started.
Once you are up and running, even from the Live CD, you can connect and surf the Internet immediately with a LAN cable connection to your router or broadband modem.
You can use the full Open Office suite immediately and all the other applications will be there in the Live CD boot-up system as well.

http://software.opensuse.org/112/enThere are two different flavours of the desktop interface to choose from.
KDE and Gnome.
KDE is very graphics intensive and hence very pretty. GNOME chooses the simplicity path and hence will run much faster on very old computers but is also pleasing in a simple kind of way.
Why am I doing this?
Because I believe in community projects and that this is the future for software development. Because I believe in sharing a good thing. Because the best things in life are free.
Enjoy!!!

First Start-up Introduction Screen
This is the introduction screen on first boot-up. The desktop interface is called "KDE", which stands for K-Desktop Environment.
Novell is the commercial company supporting this community project and provides a "Enterprise" version of the software for companies with technical support.

Start Menu
This is a screen shot of the "Start Menu". As you can see, it provides the same way of navigation as in Windows. The programs are all automatically installed and done very quickly.
Live CD boots in minutes to a full operating system with all the applications ready for use.
You will be amazed.
